Founded by three Detroit area Lions Clubs’ members in 1939, Leader Dogs for the Blind® provides dog guides to people who are blind and visually impaired, for the purpose of enhancing their mobility, independence and quality of life. Since that time, they have assisted over 14,000 people in achieving the freedom of safe and independent travel.
Each year over 270 students attend a Leader Dogs for the Blind 26-day residential training program to be paired with a dog guide. This is a life-changing event that opens the doors to independence, safety and self-worth for these students. The breeding, raising and training of a dog and student costs approximately $40,000 per dog.
The Leader Dogs Classic in Arizona is a two day series of non-profit charity events that are annually planned, organized and staged by an organization of 100% local community volunteers. The annual Classic is traditionally held in May with the primary purpose of raising funds for the Leader Dogs for the Blind organization.
The first day kicks-off with an opportunity for visually-impaired golfers to play each other in an 18 hole golf tournament.
On Sunday evening, a key giver cocktail party for invitation only participants is hosted in the home of a local sponsor.
The Leader Dogs Classic golf tournament is played on the second day (Monday), followed by a reception and dinner accompanied by a live and silent auction. There are also opportunities throughout the tournament to win prizes donated by both private and corporate sponsors.
Sponsors enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate their civic commitment to the community as well as the personal satisfaction of having help provide a dog guide to a visually impaired person.
